JAKARTA - Lebanon is seeking a permanent ceasefire with Israel through negotiations to restore stability, Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi said on Friday (17/4).
"A lasting ceasefire is also aimed at ensuring the security of the withdrawal of Israeli forces, expanding Lebanese authority over all its territory, and exclusive control over weapons by the state," Raggi said in a meeting with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel in Beirut.
He also stressed the need for continued international support, especially from European countries, so that the Lebanese army can strengthen its capabilities and maintain security and stability.
Rangel reiterated Portugal's full support for Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity and welcomed the ceasefire and the negotiation path that Beirut would take.
According to him, the process is an opportunity to reach a comprehensive and sustainable solution to increase stability and end the conflict.
On Thursday (16/4), US President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel.
More than 2,196 people were killed and 7,185 injured during Israel's 45-day offensive in Lebanon, with more than a million people displaced, according to official government figures.
Israel launched a war against Lebanon in October 2023, and a ceasefire was announced in November the following year, but Israel continued to violate it every day before expanding its attacks on March 2.
Not only attacking, Israel also occupied part of southern Lebanon.
