JAKARTA - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed Iran's decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as a right step, said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric on Friday (17/4).
Previously, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that commercial and shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz would be fully opened during the period of truce with the US.
On the other hand, President Donald Trump said the US Navy blockade of Iranian ports would remain in place until an agreement with Tehran was reached, with most of the points he said had been negotiated.
"The Secretary-General (UN) welcomes today's announcement by the Islamic Republic of Iran that the Strait of Hormuz is fully open to all commercial vessels for the remainder of the ceasefire. The Secretary-General considers this a positive step," Dujarric said.
As the strait reopened, the United Nations demanded that all parties to the Middle East conflict respect freedom of navigation, Dujarric said.
"The Secretary-General remains fully supportive of diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful way out of the current conflict. He also hopes that, along with the ceasefire, this step will contribute to building trust between the parties and strengthening the ongoing dialogue facilitated by Pakistan," Dujarric said.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched an attack on a number of targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties.
On April 11, Iran and the US held talks in Islamabad after Trump announced an agreement with Tehran on a two-week ceasefire. However, on April 12, Vice President JD Vance said the two countries failed to reach an agreement.
Last Thursday (16/4), Trump said that the next meeting between Washington and Tehran could take place as early as this weekend.
