Medan PN Judge Sentences Courier 10 Kg of Methamphetamine to Life in Prison

MEDAN - A panel of judges at the Medan District Court (PN) in North Sumatra sentenced the defendant in the narcotics case, Redi Mawardi alias Redi (39), to life imprisonment for being proven to be a courier of 10 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

"Punishing the defendant Redi Mawardi with life imprisonment," said Presiding Judge Muhammad Kasim at the Medan District Court, Wednesday, April 15, reported by ANTARA.

The panel of judges stated that the defendant was found guilty as charged by the public prosecutor.

"The defendant is proven to have violated Article 114 paragraph (2) jo. Article 132 paragraph (1) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics jo. Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code jo. Law Number 1 of 2026 concerning Criminal Adjustment," said Kasim.

He said that in his consideration, the panel of judges said that the defendant's actions did not support the government's efforts to eradicate narcotics and had the potential to damage the nation's generation.

"The mitigating circumstances, the defendant regrets his actions," said Kasim.

After reading the verdict, the panel of judges gave seven days to the defendant and the Belawan District Attorney's Office Public Prosecutor (JPU) to express their attitude, whether to accept the verdict or appeal.

"The defendant and the public prosecutor are given seven days to state their position, whether to appeal or accept this verdict," said Kasim.

The verdict was lighter than the demand of the public prosecutor (JPU) Frisillia Bella who previously demanded the death penalty for the defendant Redi.

"Asking the panel of judges to sentence the defendant Redi Mawardi to death," said Frisillia Bella in his plea.
