North Korea on Thursday announced it had conducted a test-fire of a tactical ballistic missile equipped with a cluster munitions warhead, claiming the weapon was capable of destroying a target area with high intensity power, according to the Yonhap News Agency.
The launch involved the Hwasong-11Ka surface-to-surface missile and was part of a series of tests of a weapons system that Pyongyang described as "important" carried out between Monday and Wednesday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, quoted by Anadolu (9/4).
The state-run news agency said the test fired verified the missile's ability to "pulverize to ashes" targets covering an area of about 6.5 to 7 hectares using a high-density explosive.
According to KCNA, the exercise is intended to assess the operational effectiveness of tactical ballistic missiles and the destruction capacity of its cluster type warhead.
The latest weapons test was reported by KCNA as "very important" in the development of the North Korean armed forces as part of "routine activities to continue to develop and improve weapon systems," according to The Korea Times.
Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un did not appear at the test site, as state media did not mention his inspection.
