JAKARTA - Member of Commission III of the DPR, Hasbiallah Ilyas, urged the police to eradicate the act of gangsterism in the country, after the death of a resident in West Java, Dadang (58) as a result of being harassed by a group of drunk gangsters. He assessed that this event should be a momentum for the police to take firm action against groups or individuals who commit intimidation for personal gain.
"We appreciate the police for arresting the perpetrators of thuggery in West Java who killed a citizen. This is an opportunity to cleanse Indonesia of thuggery in various forms. Because we have received information that thuggery is increasingly disturbing," said Hasbiallah Ilyas to reporters, Wednesday, April 8.
Hasbi assessed that the violence that triggered the loss of life of residents was a harsh reminder for the government not to take the problem of gangsterism lightly. He emphasized that at this time residents are always faced with acts of gangsterism ranging from illegal parking at minimarkets, pak ogah, to unemployed groups that represent organizations to harass business actors.
"This situation cannot be left. In the midst of economic pressure, the act of intimidation to the public will further trigger discord," he said.
Hasbi reminded that law enforcement officers should not give any room to the practice of gangsterism in society. According to him, gangsterism is a serious threat to public safety and the prestige of the state.
"Piracy, both in the city and in the village, must be taken seriously and consistently. If left alone, this practice will develop into a systematic and destructive pattern of extortion of social order. Firm action is important to provide a deterrent effect while protecting the community from acts of violence," he said.
Hasbi also emphasized that eradicating hooliganism is not only about law enforcement, but also part of efforts to maintain public confidence in the state. He stated that the state must not be defeated by groups that use violence and intimidation for personal gain.
"If hooliganism is allowed, people will live in fear, economic activity will be disrupted, and the law will lose its authority. Therefore, the state must be present and ensure the security of every citizen," he concluded.
As reported, the victim was abused by about 10 thugs for refusing to give security money. The perpetrators abused the victim using a bamboo about 35 centimeters long at his daughter's wedding in Cikumpay Village, Kertamukti Village, Campaka District, Purwakarta Regency, West Java, on Saturday, April 4.
Previously, the victim's brother had given money to the perpetrators. However, the perpetrators asked for money for the second time for Rp500,000. The second request was rejected by the victim, which then led to persecution that caused the victim to die.
