Extreme Weather Watch Today, Heavy Rain Threatens Sumatra to Sulawesi

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urges the public to increase their readiness for the potential of heavy to very heavy rain in a number of regions in Indonesia, Thursday, April 2.

"The readiness for potential heavy to very heavy rain in the North Sumatra, Central Java, Yogyakarta Special Region, West Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, and West Sulawesi areas needs to be improved," said BMKG Praktirawan Yuyun Wulandari, quoted by Antra, Thursday morning.

In detail, BMKG urges the public to be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in Padang, Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, Yogyakarta, Palangkaraya, and Banjarmasin.

The potential for moderate intensity rain in the western region is predicted to occur in Bandung and Tanjung Selor, light rain is likely to fall in Medan, Pekanbaru, Tanjung Pinang, Serang, Jakarta, Semarang, Surabaya, and Samarinda.

"Heavy cloudy weather in the western region is expected to cover Banda Aceh, Jambi, Pangkal Pinang, and Pontianak, and there is a potential for hazy weather in the Palembang area," he said.

For eastern Indonesia, he reminded that moderate intensity rain should be watched out for because it has the potential to flood Makassar and Mamuju.

Light rain potential is predicted to occur in Denpasar, Mataram, Kendari, Palu, Gorontalo, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayawijaya, and Merauke.

For the potential of cloudy to cloudy weather, it is estimated that it will cover Kupang, Manado, Ternate, Ambon, and Jayapura, while the potential for smoke or fog in Sorong.
