ACEH - Subulussalam Resort Police (Polres) personnel, Aceh Province, have secured an orangutan (pongo abelii) that roams in residential areas, Jabi-Jabi Barat Village, Sultan Daulat District, Aceh.

"The orangutan is still small, estimated to be only a few months old. We will then hand over the protected animal to the BKSDA for further treatment," said Subulussalam Police Chief AKBP Qori Wicaksono in Subulussalam, as reported by Antara, Friday, June 4.

The existence of the orangutan was first discovered on Sunday, 30 May afternoon. Following up on the information, Sultan Daulat Police personnel immediately moved to the location.

Arriving at the location, officers found an orangutan cub in good health, which is thought to have been separated from its mother. According to residents, the wild animals had become a spectacle and entertainment for residents and children.

After coordinating with the police chief, the personnel at the location decided to take the orangutan child to the Sultan Daulat Police Headquarters.

"If it is not secured, it is feared that the orangutan child will die because the community, especially children, are very happy and make it a spectacle," said AKBP Qori Wicaksono.

Furthermore, said the Chief of Police, Sultan Daulat Police personnel contacted the Aceh BKSDA representative in Subulussalam City and handed him the orangutan child to the state conservation agency.

"Before being taken, the orangutan child has been checked for health first. Then, the orangutan is put in a cage that has been prepared by the BKSDA," said AKBP Qori Wicaksono.

The police chief said orangutans are protected animals based on Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning the conservation of living natural resources and their ecosystems.

"We would like to thank the public for reporting on the whereabouts of the orangutans. We urge if there is a protected wild animal, immediately inform the police or other related parties," said AKBP Qori Wicaksono.
