Two people were killed when the boat they were traveling on capsized in the waters of Henoko near the location of the US base construction in Japan.

NBC News on Monday, March 16, reported that Japanese coastguards said two boats carrying 21 people capsized off the southern coast of the island of Okinawa.

A total of 18 of the 21 people on the two boats were students from a middle school in Kyoto City, 10 from Heiwa Maru school and eight from Fukutsu.

The group was in the Henoko area as part of a field study of the peace education program.

Local officials said beach rescuers evacuated 21 victims from the water but a 17-year-old student and Fukutsu's captain were later pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, two people were injured but their condition was not life-threatening.

Coast guard officials said the cause of the accident was still under investigation by security officials.
