JAKARTA - The DPR has passed the Draft Law (RUU) on Amendments to Law Number 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright as a DPR initiative proposal in the Plenary Session of the IV Session of the 2025-2026 DPR Session.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani emphasized that the Copyright Bill is present to protect creators and creative people, especially in the digital era and benefit from economic justice.

"This Copyright Bill was drafted to answer the challenges of the ever-evolving digital era, so that protection for creators and creative people is stronger and more relevant. We want to ensure that every creator: musicians, writers, artists, journalists, and other creative workers, get fair economic rewards and benefits for their work," said Puan, Thursday, March 12.

Puan explained that the Copyright Bill regulates the management of royalties that is more transparent and accountable. Thus, according to him, the economic rights of creators really go to those who are entitled.

"We also ensure that the creator's royalties are never lost. Even though the creator has not been identified, the state protects their economic rights until they are found," explained Puan.

The DPR also underlined the issue of digital platform responsibility in the Copyright Bill to become a fair partner for creators, not just a party that uses works without proper compensation. According to Puan, the Copyright Bill also regulates protection against journalistic works and press companies that are strengthened.

"This is so that quality journalism can still survive in the midst of digital disruption," he said.

The Copyright Bill also introduces regulations regarding artificial intelligence and copyright, which is an adaptive step to ensure that technology does not sacrifice the rights of creators. "The cultural wealth of the nation in the form of cultural expressions. traditional is guarded and inventoried by the state, so that it remains sustainable and protected in value," said Puan.

Puan stated that the DPR opened the widest possible space for public input.

"We want to hear the voices of creators, academics, industry players, and the general public in this discussion process. This is not a hasty regulation. The discussion process is carried out gradually, carefully, and involves various stakeholders," he explained.

Puan emphasized that the ultimate goal of the Copyright Bill is to create a healthy, fair, and beneficial creative ecosystem for as many Indonesians as possible. "This Copyright Bill is designed to answer the challenges of the ever-evolving digital era, so that protection for creators and creative people is stronger and more relevant," said Puan.
