JAKARTA - Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai considers the media to have a strategic role in strengthening the development of human rights (HAM) in Indonesia through the dissemination of educational information and public oversight of the course of power.
According to Pigai, collaboration between the government and the press community is an important step to build public awareness of human rights values and strengthen democratic practices.
"Without involving the media community, the press community, it is difficult. Because after all, the press is one of the greatest forces that can build civilization, human rights development in our country, the Republic of Indonesia," said Pigai after launching the Media Press and Human Rights Civilization Development program in Jakarta, Wednesday, March 12.
Pigai explained that the media not only serves as a means of delivering information, but also as a pillar of democracy that is able to expand public understanding of national development.
He assessed that the media can play an active role in campaigning for human rights development in various sectors, both in the civil and political fields as well as in the economic, social, and cultural fields.
"The media must be able to campaign for positive things about national development, especially the development of human rights in the civil and political fields, in the economic, social, and cultural fields," he said.
According to Pigai, cooperation between the government and the media is also expected to build a constructive dialogue space and strengthen public participation in efforts to promote human rights in Indonesia.
He hopes that similar collaborations can be expanded by various ministries, institutions, and local governments to encourage media involvement in building a civilization based on respect for human rights.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria stated that journalists have an important role in efforts to protect human rights.
He revealed that the National Human Rights Commission had even placed the mass media as part of human rights defenders.
"Komnas HAM has issued a statement that journalists are also human rights defenders. In other words, journalists are also human rights defenders," said Nezar.
According to him, this role arises because of the task of journalists who report various human rights violations and monitor the course of power.
"The press is also considered to encourage advocacy and defense for people who are victims of human rights violations," he added.
