JAKARTA - President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the military had hit and "completely destroyed" 10 inactive minesweeping vessels, warning any mines laid in the Strait of Hormuz by Iran must be removed immediately.
In response to reports that Iran had begun laying mines in the strait, President Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social: "If Iran has placed mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and we have no reports about it, we want the mines to be removed, IMMEDIATELY!" as reported by Al Arabiya from Reuters (11/3).
President Trump said that if Tehran did not do so, they would face military consequences, without giving details.
"If for any reason mines are placed, and the mines are not immediately removed, the military consequences for Iran will be at an unprecedented level. On the other hand, if they remove what may have been placed, it will be a big step in the right direction!" wrote President Trump.
He said the US was using the same technology used to fight drug smugglers to "permanently remove any ship or boat that tries to plant mines in the Strait of Hormuz," adding that the US had hit and destroyed 10 inactive minesweeping vessels.
Earlier on Tuesday, CBS News reported that US intelligence had begun to see indications that Iran was taking steps to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
