SOLO - Mayor of Surakarta, Central Java, Gibran Rakabuming Raka has banned school graduation convoys due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Those in Solo 'don't' need to fall into euphoria, we are still in the middle of a pandemic," he said in Solo, quoted by Antara, Thursday, June 3.

Gibran said the joy of graduating from both high school and junior high school does not need to be celebrated with convoy celebrations on the streets.

According to Gibran, the Surakarta City Government will cooperate with related parties to disperse the convoy action.

"If there is a convoy, it will be immediately disbanded," he continued.

Meanwhile, Head of the Surakarta City Education Office, Etty Retnowati, said that apart from no student graduation ceremony, this year there will also be no student release ceremony.

"Even if it is only done online, if there is a 'drive thru' there will be representatives only," he said.

Etty explained that the junior high school graduation itself will be held on Friday, June 4th. He hopes the pass rate will reach 100 percent.

"I don't have the data yet, hopefully all of them will pass with good results. For the system (it's done) 'online'," said Etty.
