Express condolences to Iran, Puan reminds the Indonesian government to continue to carry out active free politics

JAKARTA - The Chairperson of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, Puan Maharani, expressed her condolences over the death of the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, following the Israeli attack at the end of February. Puan reminded the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to continue to carry out active free politics and also maintain world peace.

This was conveyed by Puan in the opening speech of the DPR RI trial which was held at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday, March 10.

Puan said that currently the world is witnessing geopolitical conflicts that are resolved using military force. Tensions involving the United States and Israel on the one hand, as well as Iran on the other, show the dynamics of international relations that are full of strategic interests, regional security dominance, and global power competition.

Puan assessed that the escalation of military action also brought a critical collective understanding that the current use of military force had ignored the principle of respect for state sovereignty, showed the dominance of certain countries over other countries, ignored the role of multilateral institutions in preventing wider conflicts, and the failure of the global security system which is no longer able to guarantee the balance of interests between countries.

"The conflict between the United States - Israel, and Iran not only reflects the opposition of interests at the regional level, but also describes the great challenge for global governance in the future. This situation reaffirms the importance of strengthening international law, the role of international institutions in maintaining peace, justice, world stability, as well as the right of countries to defend their sovereignty," said Puan in his speech.

"On behalf of the leadership and members of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, we express our deepest condolences for the death of His Eminence Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who fell in the Israeli and US military attack on Iranian territory on February 28, 2026," continued the grandson of the Proclaimer of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno.

Puan said that Indonesia as a country that upholds the principles of independence, lasting peace, and social justice, expresses its deepest sympathy to all the people of Iran who are facing this difficult time.

The DPR RI also supports every effort and initiative of diplomacy, both bilateral, regional, and multilateral, to encourage all parties to refrain from and avoid further escalation of the conflict, to prioritize respect for state sovereignty, and to resolve disputes peacefully.

The DPR RI urges the United Nations to take a role, immediately act in maintaining respect for international law, protection of civilians, as well as a joint commitment to maintaining global peace and stability.

"The DPR RI also emphasizes that the Government of the Republic of Indonesia must continue to carry out free foreign policy and be active in safeguarding national interests wisely, consistently, and constructively in responding to the evolving global geopolitical dynamics," concluded Puan.
