SURABAYA - East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa stated her party's readiness to strictly monitor the policy of limiting the ownership of social media accounts for children under the age of 16. This step will be implemented at the district level by involving the active role of schools and families.
The policy refers to the Minister of Communication and Digital Regulation (Permenkomdigi) Number 9 of 2026, which is a derivative of Government Regulation (PP) Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Governance of the Implementation of Electronic Systems in Child Protection or known as PP Tunas.
"This step is very important as an effort to protect children from various threats in the digital space, such as pornography, cyberbullying, online fraud, to the potential for digital addiction," said Khofifah in Surabaya, Tuesday, March 10.
Protect the Future of the Young Generation
Khofifah assessed that the issuance of the regulation from the Ministry of Communication and Information was a strategic step to maintain the safety of children in the midst of rapid technology. Although digitization brings great benefits for education, the accompanying risks must be managed wisely.
The first female governor in East Java emphasized that the digital space must remain safe and healthy for the mental development of children.
"We want to ensure that the digital space remains a safe space for children. Protecting the younger generation must be a shared priority," he said.
Parent and Digital Literacy Synergy
The East Java Provincial Government is committed to fully supporting the center through strengthening the digital literacy program and healthy internet education. However, Khofifah emphasized that the success of this policy depends on the synergy between digital platforms, educational institutions, and parents.
According to him, supervision at home and school is the key to ensuring that technology does not actually damage the child's growth period.
"Technology must humanize humans, not sacrifice the childhood of our children. The role of parents and schools is very important in providing digital literacy education so that they are wise and productive," concluded Khofifah.
