JAKARTA - Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said Iran has promised to seriously investigate the incident involving a drone attack in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

"Iran promises to thoroughly investigate yesterday's UAV attack in Nakhchivan," Bayramov said at a joint press conference in Baku with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Moldova Mihai Popsoi, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Friday, March 6.

"Diplomatic steps have been taken in response to this incident, and a protest note has been sent [to Tehran] accompanied by a phone call to my [Iranian] counterpart," he added.

"The investigation of the Iranian side is part of the overall process. The security of Azerbaijan is under the strict control of the head of state," he added.

On Thursday, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said the drone attack had been carried out from Iranian territory into the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, and injured four people.

Following the attack, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in a meeting of the security council of the armed forces, the country's border service, and special forces units were deployed in a state of high alert.

On February 28, 2026, the US and Israel launched a series of attacks on a number of targets inside Iran, including Tehran, causing damage and casualties among civilians.

Iranian state television confirmed the martyrdom of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a result of the attack.

Iran then responded to the military aggression by launching missile attacks on Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
