PEKANBARU - The Tesso Nilo National Park Office (TNTN), Riau Province, has tightened patrols in the area and encouraged cross-stakeholder synergy to eradicate wildlife snares after the death of a baby elephant due to being entangled in the conservation area.
"We express our deep concern. For us this is a hard blow, there are still activities that cause the death of wildlife in the forest area," said Head of the TNTN Office Heru Sutmantoro as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, March 4.
He explained that from the results of the initial examination of the carcass, a trap was found that tied the front legs of the protected animal. When found, the condition of the carcass had rotted and was estimated to have died about a week.
According to him, the problem of snares is a major threat to wildlife in the Sumatran forests and does not only occur in the conservation area of national parks. TNTN which borders directly on production forests is considered to require a joint eradication of snares.
"Eradication of snares must be carried out in synergy between forest stakeholders, both ministries, local governments, and companies that manage industrial plantations," he said.
Heru emphasized that a strict ban and firm sanctions were needed for perpetrators of setting traps in all forest areas, both conservation, protected forests, and production forests. He said that perpetrators often made excuses that traps were set for wild boars that were not protected by law.
"Setting traps in any forest area must be prohibited and the perpetrators must be sanctioned firmly," he said.
The TNTN Office also increased security with the support of 230 TNI personnel who are currently also securing the area.
He invited all elements of the community to work together to eradicate the animal traps that are the main threat.
"Especially for elephants, because the size of the trap installed for protected animals often traps baby elephants who have smaller soles than adult elephants," said Head of the TNTNHeruSutmantoro Center.
