YCAB Foundation together with Orica reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening inclusive and relevant Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education with the future needs through the STEM Spark: Ignite Future Career program in East Kalimantan.
Based on data from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, strengthening STEM competence is becoming increasingly urgent in line with Indonesia's target of producing 9 million digital talents by 2030. Currently, Indonesia only produces around 100,000 to 200,000 digital talents per year, while the need is estimated to reach 600,000 people per year.
Orica Indonesia President Director, James Tiedgen, said support for education is an integral part of the company's commitment in every operational region.
"Education has always been an important part of our commitment to the community around our operational areas. Orica's legacy is built through innovation, research, and technology, so we understand very well that basic STEM skills play a big role in opening up opportunities for young generations," said James, Tuesday, March 3.
He added that the collaboration with YCAB Foundation is a strategic step to prepare future talents who are ready to meet the needs of an ever-growing industry.
"Through this program, we want to equip students, especially in East Kalimantan, with relevant skills so that they are able to compete and develop in the future," he said.
Founder and CEO of YCAB Foundation, Veronica Colondam, emphasized the importance of a holistic approach in developing young talent.
"We not only want students to understand STEM theory, but also see firsthand how the science they learn is connected to the industrial world and real career opportunities," said Veronica.
He added that STEM Spark is designed to strengthen students' confidence while encouraging women's participation in STEM.
"The target of 60 percent of female participants is part of our efforts to build a more inclusive education ecosystem and open wider access for women to careers in strategic sectors," he said.
The STEM Spark program will last for three years, targeting 1,000 high school and vocational high school students, 50 science teachers and guidance counselors, and 20 schools in East Kalimantan. The range of activities includes teacher training, practice-based learning, Career Day, to project competitions and the STEM Festival as an event for appreciation and strengthening of networks.
The STEM Spark teacher training was held on February 11-12, 2026 at the East Kalimantan Provincial Office of Education and Culture as an initial step in implementing the program in schools.
