JAKARTA - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has condemned the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a "great crime" and promised to respond, according to a statement from his office.

Iran announced a 40-day mourning period, following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an attack launched by Israel and the United States on Saturday.

"This great crime will never be left unanswered and will open a new page in the history of the Islamic and Shiite world. The pure blood of this high-ranking leader will flow like a rushing spring and will eradicate the oppression and crimes of America-Zionism," said President Pezeshkian, launching Al Jazeera (1/3).

"This time, too, with all our strength and determination, with the support of the Islamic nation and the free people of the world, we will make the perpetrators and commanders of this great crime regret it," he added.

As previously reported, Israel and the United States launched an attack on the capital Tehran and a number of cities in Iran on Saturday.

Quoted from ABC, the United States dubbed the operation "Opeation Epic Fury" while Israel called it "Operation Roaring Lion."

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that many high-ranking Iranian military, intelligence and security leaders were killed. Iran has not confirmed its officials who were killed, except for Khamenei's death.

Iran retaliated by launching attacks on Israeli territory and a number of US military installations in the Middle East.
