JAKARTA - The Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) of Ghana, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, said that as many as 55 of his citizens were killed defending Russia in the battle in Ukraine.
"We were told that 272 Ghanaians are believed to have been persuaded to fight since 2022, of which an estimated 55 have been killed and 2 captured as prisoners of war," Ablakwa said on his X account, Friday, February 27.
Ablakwa learned the information after meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) of Ukraine in Kyiv.
"We cannot turn a blind eye to these heartbreaking statistics. These are not just numbers, they represent human lives, the hopes of many Ghanaian families and our nation," Ablakwa wrote.
Ukraine on Wednesday, February 25, recorded more than 1,780 foreign citizens from 36 African countries identified as fighting for Russia.
Ablakwa said his government "is committed to tracking down and dismantling all illegal recruitment schemes on the dark web that operate in our jurisdiction."
