JAKARTA - The Cuban government reported an armed attack from a ship registered in the state of Florida, United States.
In its statement, the Cuban Ministry of the Interior said the ship violated Cuba's territorial waters, an island nation about 150 kilometers from the southern tip of Florida.
The US ship was detected about 1 nautical mile northeast of the El Pino Strait, off the north coast of Cayo Falcones Island.
Cuban authorities responded to the intrusion by sending five border guards.
The Cuban personnel were fired upon with firearms from the ship as they attempted to approach.
As reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, February 26, the Cuban commander involved in the operation was reportedly injured in the shootout, while four of the alleged attackers were killed.
Six other people from the US ship were injured, and they were all taken to a medical facility in Cuba for further treatment.
"With this challenge, Cuba reaffirms its determination to protect its territorial waters based on the principle of national defense as the main pillar of the Cuban State in safeguarding sovereignty and ensuring regional stability," said a statement from the Cuban Ministry of the Interior.
The armed attack comes amid tensions and US pressure on the island nation.
US President Donald Trump vowed to see the island "fall," while maintaining an embargo that has resulted in severe energy shortages in Cuba.
