JAKARTA - The Digital Platform Corporate Responsibility Committee to Support Quality Journalism (KTP2JB) protested a clause in the RI-United States trade agreement signed by President Prabowo Subianto and President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., Thursday, February 19, 2026. KTP2JB assessed that the clause has the potential to weaken the press ecosystem precisely when Indonesia is building Publisher Rights.

The disputed clause is listed in Annex III page 39, Article 3.3 "Requirements for Digital Service Providers". The content says, "Indonesia must refrain from requiring US digital service providers (platform services) to support domestic news organizations through paid licenses, user data sharing, and profit-sharing models."

KTP2JB Chairman Suprapto assessed that the provision could make the US-based digital platform "unaffordable" under the Presidential Regulation on Publisher Rights. "This agreement, if it is in force, can make digital platforms from the United States not affordable under the Presidential Regulation on Publisher Rights. Because with the obligation in the Presidential Regulation alone, they are less obedient. Moreover, it is voluntary," said Suprapto in a written statement received on Thursday, February 26.

He emphasized that the change from an obligation to "refrain" could threaten the sustainability of the press that is being built together. The impact, he said, is not only hitting the media industry, but also harming the public. "This is not only for the interests of the press, but also for the public at large who are entitled to quality information," he added.

KTP2JB member Sasmito said the committee would immediately send a letter to President Prabowo and the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia so that the provision on the digital platform was removed from the RI-US agreement. This attitude was strengthened in the discussion of the press community at the Press Council Hall, Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (24/2/2026), which was attended by KTP2JB managers, Damar Juniarto, Ambang Priyonggo, Herik Kurniawan, Guntur Syahputra Saragih, Alexander C. Suban, and Member of the Press Council Abdul Manan, along with representatives of PWI, AJI, AMSI, SMSI, SPS, PRRSNI, IJTI, ATVSI, LBH Pers, and Indonesia Digital Association.

"The committee is very happy, the press community has the same attitude and view that this trade agreement is detrimental to the press ecosystem. I think it is also the duty of the press to remind the government to take the best steps for the nation," said Sasmito.

Sasmito also urged the US government to prioritize transparency and accountability in the relationship between digital platforms and press companies, referring to global principles formulated in Johannesburg, South Africa, July 14, 2023, which were supported by 75 publishers, journalists, and media researchers from 25 countries.
