Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Sunday called for calm, saying there was "absolute coordination" with all state governments following the killing of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes alias "El Mencho."
"There is absolute coordination with the governments of all states; we must remain informed and calm," President Sheinbaum said on the social media X, as reported by Anadolu (23/2).
"Activity is normal in most countries," President Sheinbaum added.
The Mexican president further acknowledged the unrest triggered by the operation, noting that the Ministry of Defense had reported "various blockades and other reactions" that occurred after the operation by federal forces.
"We work every day for peace, security, justice and well-being of Mexico," he said.
Previously, the Mexican Ministry of Defense said the Special Forces carried out an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, known as the CJNG stronghold, with the aim of arresting Oseguera.
"During this operation, Mexican military personnel were attacked, and in order to defend their physical integrity, they repelled the aggression. As a result, four members of the 'CJNG' criminal group were killed at the scene and three others were seriously injured, who died during an air evacuation to Mexico City," the ministry said.
"Among the latter is Ruben "N" (aka Mencho); however, the relevant authorities will be responsible for forensic activities to confirm his identity."
The ministry added that two other members of the cartel were arrested and armored vehicles and various weapons were seized, including a rocket launcher capable of shooting down aircraft.
"El Mencho"s murder triggered a violent reaction in several states, with roadblocks, burning vehicles, and armed clashes reported in several states.
Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro issued a red alert and canceled in-person classes in schools on Monday.
