JAKARTA - Entering the demographic bonus phase, the issue of family planning is back in the spotlight. The government considers the readiness of couples in planning pregnancies to be an important key to realizing a healthy and quality family.
Deputy Minister of Population and Family Development (Wamendukbangga)/Deputy Head of BKKBN, Ratu Ayu Isyana Bagoes Oka, emphasized that the family planning (FP) program is not aimed at limiting the number of children, but ensuring that pregnancy occurs at the right time and in a ready condition.
"The readiness of a couple of fertile age is very important whether they are ready to have children or not," he said on the sidelines of the KB Monitoring activity in Tegal City, Central Java, Sunday.
He revealed that there are still couples who experience unplanned pregnancies because they do not use contraceptives.
According to him, this condition needs to be responded to through continuous education by KB and midwife educators so that couples of childbearing age understand the importance of pregnancy planning.
The Family Planning Monitoring Program, which is run by the Ministry of Population and Family Development together with BKKBN, has now been held in around 300 regencies/cities. The program also targets areas with certain characteristics that require special attention.
He said that the achievement of the Peduli KB program in Tegal City had even exceeded the target set.
"Therefore, we appreciate the Tegal City Government, including the Health Office, the Family Planning Office, and the IDI who collaborated to make the Family Planning program successful. This Family Planning Monitoring program proves that the state is present in the service of citizens' contraception," he said.
Based on data from field implementation, the majority of participants in the Tegal City KB Care Program chose the implant contraceptive method with a protection period of about three years, followed by the IUD method.
Furthermore, he added that the government would also prioritize couples of childbearing age who had just given birth to receive post-natal contraceptive services, in order to maintain the birth spacing and the health of mothers and children.
