JAKARTA - Russian Ambassador to the US Alexander Darchiev said that Russian-US relations were not developing fast enough, but contacts with US authorities were ongoing and would continue.

"Bilateral relations are developing. It cannot be said to have happened quickly. We hope this happens faster. However, we are working, working continuously. Contact continues," said Darchiev, quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik, Tuesday, February 10.

The leaders of the two countries committed to "restore bilateral relations to at least normal conditions," he said.

"We have been working on it, are doing it, and will continue to do it," the Russian diplomat said.

According to Darchiev, the effort to maintain relations - at least at the current level - and prevent their deterioration is to maintain continuous contact.

"At the highest level, at the embassy and Foreign Ministry levels, contacts continue," he said.

He added that contacts with representatives of the US State Department (Deplu) are expected to continue.

Representatives of the US State Department, as well as the White House and Congress, attended a reception held at the Russian Embassy to commemorate Diplomatic Labor Day, said Darchiev.

"This in itself is proof that, albeit slowly, relations are improving," said Darchiev.

Despite some negative factors in relations between the two countries, "the overall trend is quite positive," he said.

He said the poor Russian-US relations in the past hindered efforts to hold a historic summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska last year.

However, the two countries were able to reach an agreement in the meeting based on mutual respect, said Darchiev.

"There is still much work to be done to overcome this toxic legacy," he said.

On August 15, 2025, Putin and Trump held talks in Alaska and discussed ways to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Both leaders spoke about the meeting in a positive tone.

After the summit, Putin said the conflict in Ukraine could be resolved. He stressed Russia's interest in a long-term settlement.
