JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said the United States would begin negotiations with Canada regarding compensation for the US regarding a bridge project linking Ontario and Michigan.

Trump warned Washington would not allow the bridge to open without what he called fair compensation.

"As everyone knows, the State of Canada has treated the United States very unfairly for decades. Now, things are turning around for the US, and fast!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Tuesday, February 10.

Trump criticized the construction of the bridge by saying Canada was building a giant bridge between Ontario and Michigan and accused the project of being built with almost no materials from the US.

He blamed the exemptions granted by the previous US administration.

"President Barack Hussein Obama foolishly gave them an exemption so they could avoid the Buy American Act, and not use any American product, including our steel," Trump said.

After making a bridge without US materials, he continued, Canada is now asking for permission to open the bridge without offering any reward.

"What the United States got - absolutely nothing!" he said.

He warned that the project would not be able to continue unless Washington's demands were met.

"I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States gets full compensation for everything we have given, and also importantly, until Canada treats the United States with the fairness and respect we deserve," he said.

Trump announced talks with Ottawa would resume as soon as possible.

He also criticized Canada's trade policies, including dairy tariffs that he said for years were unacceptable and had put US farmers at great financial risk.

He also claimed that Ontario restricted US alcohol products. According to him, the province did not even want to put alcoholic beverages, liquor, and other alcohol products from the US on their shelves.

In addition, Trump warned Canada not to strengthen ties with China, stating that Prime Minister Mark Carney wants to "make a deal with China - which will devour Canada completely."

Trump also argued that the United States should own at least half of the assets on the bridge project, citing the enormous revenue generated from access to the US market.
