JAKARTA - The European Commission has sent a notice of objection to Meta on the grounds of alleged violations of EU antitrust rules regarding restrictions on third-party artificial intelligence (AI) assistants from WhatsApp.

The Commission also announced its intention to impose temporary measures to prevent harm to competition.

"The European Commission has sent a Statement of Objections to Meta, which contains Meta's initial view of violating EU antitrust rules by excluding third-party AI assistants from being able to access and interact with users on WhatsApp," the Commission said, as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Tuesday, February 10.

The European Commission added that Meta risks hindering competitors from entering or growing in the rapidly growing AI assistant market.

The Commission also intends to impose temporary measures to prevent serious and irreparable market losses as a result of the policy change, while still taking into account Meta's response and respect for its right to a defense.

"Meta's flagship products are its social networks, such as Facebook and Instagram, as well as consumer communication applications such as WhatsApp and Messenger. Meta also operates online advertising services as well as virtual reality and augmented reality products. In addition, Meta provides a versatile AI assistant, Meta AI," the statement said.

On December 5, the European Commission imposed a fine of 120 million euros (around Rp2.39 trillion) on the social media platform X for violating the Digital Services Act, particularly regarding ad transparency and researchers' access to open data and information.
