SUMEDANG - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Sumedang Regency, West Java, recorded three houses of residents were severely damaged due to landslides that occurred in Karyamukti Village, Tomo District.
"The three houses affected by the disaster that were severely damaged were each inhabited by three families with a total of six people," said the Head of the Sumedang BPBD, Bambang Rianto, in Sumedang, Antara, Tuesday, February 3.
He explained that the land shift occurred in Karyamukti Village due to heavy rainfall that hit the area.
"The land shift initially occurred on Monday at around 05.00 WIB and became more severe with a movement length of 15 meters and a height of about 10 meters," he said.
He explained that the location of the land shift was around the Cipeles River with a distance of approximately 40 meters from the point of incident, making the condition suspected of exacerbating the movement of the land due to the high water discharge of the river after heavy rain hit the area.
He also said that the impact of land shifting caused damage to residents' houses because the unstable soil made some buildings unable to withstand the sudden movement of the soil.
The Sumedang Regency BPBD has sent a team to the location to conduct data collection on the impact of the disaster and ensure the condition of the affected residents, as well as to anticipate the possibility of subsequent land movements.
"The soil conditions at the scene are still moving so residents need to increase their vigilance," he said.
The Sumedang Regency BPBD appeals to people living in disaster-prone areas to remain vigilant, especially during high rainfall.
His party also asked residents to immediately report to local authorities if they found signs of land movement or other potential disasters in order to minimize the impact of disasters and prevent casualties.
