JAKARTA - A young man named Ilham Kaulid (22) dared to dive into the Cengkareng Drain River, Cengkareng, West Jakarta, on Wednesday.
In an amateur video recorded by residents, the victim was seen waving his hands asking for help while in the middle of the Cengkareng Drain River, before finally being swept away by the current.
One of the eyewitnesses, Suwarno in Jakarta, Wednesday, said the victim allegedly jumped from the bridge before being swept downstream into the middle of the river.
"At first, he jumped from the bridge. Through the bridge, he knew that he had a handle on the pole in the middle. I also wanted to nolongin, bring a getek, want to walk, I knew that he had let go. How is it, it's in the middle. When I want to go," he said.
According to him, the victim tried to save himself even though he couldn't swim.
"Yes, he saved himself, his name is a person who can't swim, yes, as much as possible, his hands," said Suwarno.
He said many residents tried to help, but did not dare to go down to the river because of the strong and dangerous currents.
"If many residents want to help, but he has reached the middle. Residents are not brave enough to get off," he said.
Officials from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of the DKI Jakarta Province are searching for the victim by deploying rubber boats. However, as of Wednesday evening, the victim has not been found.
Meanwhile, the victim's father, Nahuri, said before the incident his son said goodbye to apply for a job in the Muara Baru area with his neighbors.
"Earlier he wanted to apply for a job at Muara Baru. I let him go with his neighbor. He left, he knew his friend would come back and give him news that my son was drowning in the river," said Nahuri.
He suspected that his son had personal problems. "At first, there was a man's wife who liked him. I scolded him, don't do it. But he still hit it. Maybe it's this," he said.
Nahuri admitted that he was very shocked by this incident and hoped that his son could be found in a safe condition.
"Sad, sir, it's a child. If I could, I would straighten it out, I would guide the straight one. My hope is that if it is found alive. But if it is already gone, then we surrender to God," concluded Nahuri.
The search process was temporarily stopped and will resume Thursday (29/1) morning due to the strong current and dark conditions.
