Strong Wind Blows Over Lampung, BMKG: Due to Asian Monsoon

Lampung - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Lampung stated that the phenomenon of strong winds in the Lampung area was due to the strengthening of the Asian Monsoon.

"The strong winds felt in the Lampung area are influenced by the strengthening of the Asian Monsoon or the western wind that brings wet air masses from Asia to Australia," said the Coordinator for Data and Information of the Lampung BMKG, Rudi Harianto, when contacted in Bandarlampung, Tuesday, quoted by Antara.

He continued that in addition to that, there was also an indirect influence from the active pattern of meetings and wind turns around southern Sumatra.

"This combination increases the air pressure gradient, so that the wind speed in the Lampung area is stronger than normal," he said.

He explained, based on BMKG monitoring, wind speeds in the Lampung area generally range from 18-55 kilometers per hour, especially in coastal areas and waters such as the West Lampung waters, the southern Lampung Bay, and the southern Sunda Strait.

"Meanwhile, on land, the wind gusts can feel stronger when it rains heavily due to the influence of the downdraft from the rain cloud," he said.

He said that the potential for extreme weather, especially in the Lampung area, is still likely to last until the end of February 2026.

"Because BMKG has predicted the peak of the rainy season until February," he added.

He also appealed to the public to be aware of the potential for trees to fall, light roofs, and billboards due to strong winds.

"Then people must be careful when driving, especially during heavy rain accompanied by wind. And for fishermen and marine transportation users to pay attention to early warnings of maritime weather because strong winds can increase wave heights," he said.

He also reminded the public to always monitor official weather information and early warnings from the BMKG.

Previously, at least five residents' houses in the Indah Lestari Lubuk Housing, Kalianda District, South Lampung Regency were reported to have been damaged by a tornado that occurred on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at around 15.00 WIB.

Head of the Damkar Section of the South Lampung Damkarmat Office, Rully Fikriansyah, said the incident occurred after heavy rain accompanied by strong winds hit the area.

"Yes, the tornado disaster occurred this afternoon on Tuesday which resulted in five houses being damaged," he said in Kalianda, Tuesday.
