BANDUNG - Deputy Chairman of the West Java DPRD, Iwan Suryawan, gave serious attention to the stability of food security amid the still looming global economic turmoil.
Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah which is estimated to fall in mid-February 2026, Iwan emphasized that West Java must strengthen local independence as the main stronghold of food sovereignty.
For him, global price fluctuations should not be allowed to cripple people's purchasing power, especially when basic needs tend to increase sharply at the moment of religious holidays.
"We must ensure that every household in West Java is not burdened by the spike in food prices while performing worship. Local independence is our main fortress in facing international market shocks," said Iwan in Bandung, Tuesday, January 27.
This statement refers to the historical momentum of early 2026, where Indonesia was nationally declared to have achieved food self-sufficiency.
Iwan menilai prestasi tersebut harus menjadi pijakan kuat bagi pemerintah daerah untuk menjaga konsistensi produksi dan distribusi agar manfaatnya benar-benar sampai ke tangan warga di pasar-pasar tradisional.
This optimism is supported by data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) which projects the area of rice harvest in West Java in 2026 will reach 1.76 million hectares, or an increase of around 19.16 percent.
Rice production is also expected to reach 10.23 million tons of milled dry paddy (GKG).
Iwan assessed that this figure is very promising to ensure rice stocks during Ramadan, but he warned that the supply should not be hampered by logistical problems or speculation.
"Our task now is to ensure that this supply is not hampered by logistical problems or speculators' games in the field," said Iwan.
Although the price of medium rice was observed to be stable in the range of IDR 13,312 per kg in several large markets such as Bogor and Cimahi, Iwan noted an alarm on protein commodities.
The price of pure beef which has remained at the level of IDR 135,000 per kg and chicken eggs which have touched the figure of IDR 32,000 per kg are considered to have exceeded the Sales Reference Price (HAP).
With the prediction of a 10-15 percent increase in demand during Ramadan, he asked the West Java Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) to immediately intervene early through market operations to suppress the inflation rate from the strategic food sector.
In line with the firmness of the Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman who guarantees the safety of national stocks, Iwan encourages the acceleration of the Cheap Food Movement (GPM) program simultaneously in 27 regencies/cities.
He also paid special attention to the inequality of access to food in the southern West Java region so that the smooth supply chain was not only enjoyed by urban residents.
With the collaboration between the strengthening of regional food reserves and strict supervision from the Food Task Force, Iwan is optimistic that West Java will be able to realize food sovereignty so that the community can enter the holy month calmly without worrying about a spike in staple food prices.
