BANYUMAS - The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) at the Mount Slamet Observation Post (PGA) confirmed that Mount Slamet's activity in Central Java has not yet experienced further increase and is still at Level II or Alert.

Head of the Slamet Muhammad Rusdi PGA Post said that the volcanic activity of Mount Slamet is still dominated by periodic earthquakes as a result of daily monitoring and special reports that have been released previously.

"For now, the level of activity of Mount Slamet is still at Level II Watch and is still dominated by periodic earthquakes," he said when contacted from Purwokerto, Banyumas Regency, Antara, Tuesday, January 27.

Based on observations of the Slamet PGA Post in Gambuhan Village, Pulosari District, Pemalang Regency, on Monday before 15.00 WIB, it was confirmed that there was one deep volcanic earthquake.

However, he continued, the earthquake amplitude is still relatively small and has not shown a significant increase in volcanic activity on the mountain located in the Banyumas Regency, Purbalingga, Pemalang, Tegal, and Brebes areas.

According to him, the occurrence of one volcanic earthquake in the past is still in line with the pattern of activity of Mount Slamet in the last few days and has not changed the status of the volcano's activity.

He said that PVMBG on January 11, 2026 had released a Special Report on the Increased Activity of Mount Slamet which noted that the seismic activity of Mount Slamet was fluctuating, dominated by low-frequency earthquakes and continuous tremors, without accompanied by eruptions or significant visual changes.

"In the report, PVMBG said that monitoring deformation through Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM) and tiltmeter measurements until January 11, 2026 still showed a relatively stable condition, although there were indications of increased pressure under the volcano's body which triggered shallow earthquakes.

Regarding the high rainfall in the Gunung Slamet area in recent days, he emphasized that until now it has not been possible to determine the direct relationship between weather conditions and the occurrence of volcanic earthquakes.

"Until now we have not been able to unite the conditions of rainfall with earthquakes. Whether there is an effect or not, we also can't be sure. Usually when it rains heavily, the observed smoke does look thicker," he said.

He said PVMBG still recommends that the public, climbers, and visitors do not carry out activities within a two-kilometer radius of the summit crater of Mount Slamet.

"The public is expected to remain calm, but vigilant, and to comply with the recommendations by staying away from the two-kilometer radius from the center of activity," he said.

Rusdi said PVMBG and PGA Slamet continued to carry out intensive monitoring and would immediately review the level of activity of Mount Slamet if there were significant visual and seismic changes.

PVMBG has increased the status of Mount Slamet from Level I or Normal to Level II or Alert since October 19, 2023 due to an increase in volcanic activity on the highest mountain in Central Java.
