MAROS - An elderly woman almost died after being attacked by a python snake about seven meters long in Batu Napara Village, Baruga Village, Bantimurung District, Maros Regency, South Sulawesi.
The incident occurred after heavy rain hit the area. Around midnight, the victim named Ulan (50) was walking home from his son's house by crossing the puddles around the residential area. The flooded environment made the victim unaware of the presence of a python snake on the side of the residents' house.
When stepping into the area, the python suddenly bit the victim's left calf. In a matter of seconds, the snake immediately wrapped around the victim's body tightly to the neck. The victim fell and screamed for help while trying to break free from the snake's coils.
Several residents who heard the victim's screams rushed to the location. However, before help arrived, the victim tried to save himself by pulling the snake's tail using the remaining energy. This effort made the snake's coil begin to loosen until it finally broke off.
Residents who arrived at the location then caught the python. The large-sized snake eventually died and was taken to the side of the road. The length of the snake is estimated to be seven meters with a large body diameter.
As a result of the incident, the victim suffered a snake bite wound as wide as a hand and a tear wound of about 20 centimeters on the left calf. The victim was then rushed to the nearest health center to receive medical treatment.
The head of the Batu Napara hamlet, Najamuddin, confirmed the incident and said the size of the python was very large and dangerous.
"The diameter is about the size of a five-liter paint bucket. If it's a goat, it can be swallowed. The mouth is wide," he said, Monday, January 26.
Although the python is not poisonous, the large snake's girth has the potential to be deadly. Until now, the victim's condition is reported to have improved and is undergoing outpatient treatment.
