JAKARTA - South Korean Prime Minister (South Korea) Kim Min-seok in a meeting with US Vice President JD Vance in Washington proposed that the United States (US) send a special envoy to North Korea.
"First, I told Vance that in reality only Trump has the will and ability to improve relations with North Korea," Kim Min-seok said, as quoted by the Seoul-based Yonhap news agency, reported by ANTARA, Saturday, January 24.
"Second, I said sending a special envoy to North Korea, whoever it is, can be an approach to express the intention to improve relations," he added.
Kim also said he had an opinion on a number of candidates who were considered the most optimal for the position.
During the meeting, Kim and Vance also discussed Seoul's ongoing investigation into US-listed e-commerce company Coupang, regarding the alleged leak of customer data believed to include personal information on around 33.7 million users.
However, the company stated that only data from around 3,000 customer accounts were affected.
"Vance asked Seoul and Washington to manage this issue well so as not to cause misunderstandings between the two governments and not to get hotter," Kim said.
He promised to immediately convey Seoul's views whenever false information emerged.
Two US investors, Thursday (22/1), informed Seoul of their intention to file an arbitration claim over what they called discriminatory actions against Coupang, and asked Washington to launch an investigation.
Kim said he had also conveyed to Vance that there was no discriminatory treatment of US businesses in South Korea.
The visit was Kim's first overseas trip since taking office as prime minister, as well as the first independent visit by a South Korean prime minister to the US since the late 1980s.
Coupang is a giant Korean e-commerce company and is often dubbed the "Korean Amazon". It was founded in 2010 by Bom Kim. Although it has strong roots with its main operations in South Korea and Taiwan, the company is incorporated in Delaware, USA, and headquartered in Seattle, Washington.
Coupang is the market leader in South Korean e-commerce with its "Rocket Delivery" service that can deliver goods within hours or the next day. In addition to online retail (clothing, electronics, groceries), Coupang is also active in the food delivery (Coupang Eats), video streaming (Coupang Play), and acquisition of luxury fashion platforms (Farfetch).
Coupang conducted its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in March 2021.
