JAKARTA - Deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq said the world body hopes all efforts can be made to avoid an escalation of the situation in Iran, amid recent protests in the country and US rhetoric regarding the situation.
"Of course, we hope that all steps can be taken to avoid an escalation of the conflict in Iran. The Secretary-General (UN) has repeatedly explained that the region cannot afford an escalation of the situation there," Haq said, quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik, Saturday, January 24.
Haq stressed the UN believes any resolution on the situation in Iran, including their nuclear program, needs to be addressed through negotiations.
At the end of December, US President Donald Trump said he would support a new attack on Iran if Tehran continued to try to develop its missile and nuclear programs.
Furthermore, amid the protests in Iran, Trump also threatened a devastating attack if the protesters were killed.
The US president also promised to support the Iranian people if needed, believing that the Islamic Republic needs new leadership.
