JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump said the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should "test" the illegal immigration on the southern border, referring to Article 5 of the alliance's collective defense principles.

"Maybe we should test NATO: Implement Article 5 and force NATO to protect our southern border from illegal immigrant invasions, so that Border Patrol officers can be diverted to other tasks," Trump said on the Truth Social platform, as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, January 23.

The statement came after Trump criticized NATO for not fully supporting the US, following the comments of the European Union leader at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, which highlighted Washington's efforts to buy Greenland.

"The problem with NATO is that we are always 100 percent ready, but I don't think they will defend us," Trump said on Wednesday.

However, after attending the 56th WEF in Davos, Trump gave a more optimistic assessment when returning from Switzerland to Washington.

"On the way back to D.C. The time in Davos was incredible. The Greenland structure is being dealt with, and will benefit the US, while the Peace Council is something the world has never seen - Very special," he said on Truth Social.
