JAKARTA - Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that the United States (US) and Denmark will solve the problem related to Greenland themselves.
"I think they (the US and Denmark) will solve this problem between themselves," Putin said at a meeting with permanent members of the Russian Security Council, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Thursday, January 22.
Putin said the US was able to pay one billion US dollars (around Rp16.9 trillion) to buy Greenland, while saying Denmark had already sold its territory to the US.
"Denmark has always treated Greenland as a colony and is quite tough on the island," Putin said.
Putin said Russia had also solved a similar problem with the US.
Previously, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (21/1) reiterated his efforts regarding the US invasion of Greenland as well as sharpening his criticism of Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Trump made the statement in a special speech at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, adding new tensions to transatlantic relations.
Trump said Europe was not headed in the right direction and parts of the continent were unrecognizable in what he described as a very negative state.
