Malaysian PM Responds to Trump's Tariff Threat, Assures Iran Trade Relations Continue

JAKARTA - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysia's trade relations with Iran are still ongoing, amid threats of the imposition of 25 percent import tariffs by US President Donald Trump.

"Regarding trade with Iran, currently our (Malaysia) relationship with Iran remains. I have made two contacts with Iran. There is also a minister who has been sent to Iran," Anwar said in a question-and-answer session in the Malaysian Parliament, Kuala Lumpur, Tuesday, January 20, reported by ANTARA.

Anwar implied that he would prioritize the interests of the Malaysian people, in the sense that his government would use discretion in every international relationship.

"Don't let it look too weak, but also don't take actions that harm the interests of the country," said Anwar.

According to Anwar, as far as relations with Iran are concerned, Malaysia will continue to defend and defend Iran's rights and sovereignty.

"That is also the principle that we uphold," he explained.

Previously, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 25 percent import tariff on products from countries that still maintain trade relations with Iran, as well as on European countries that do not support the US acquisition of Greenland.
