Karawang Flood Caused by Citarum and Cibeet River Overflow

KARAWANG - Floods have hit a number of areas in the Karawang Regency area, West Java, following high rainfall which triggered the overflow of water from two major rivers, namely Citarum and Cibeet, Sunday, January 18, 2026.

"Since Saturday, heavy rain has not stopped until Sunday morning and caused flooding," said Yudi, one of the residents affected by the flood in the Bintang Alam Housing, East Telukjambe, Karawang, reported by ANTARA, Sunday.

He said that after knowing that the water level of the Citarum river was quite high, residents were alert.

That is why when the river began to overflow into residential areas, residents evacuated independently.

Then, after the officers arrived, the residents were helped by the officers to evacuate themselves and their belongings to a safer place.

The information that was successfully collected, the flood due to the overflow of the Citarum and Cibeet rivers on Sunday morning occurred in a number of areas around Karawang, including in a number of housing around the East Telukjambe and West Karawang districts.

In addition, flooding also hit residential areas in several villages in the West Telukjambe District and in the Pangkalan District.

In addition to soaking residential areas, the flooding triggered by the overflowing Citarum and Cibeet rivers also soaked farmland and highways.

The Karawang Police previously appealed to the public to be vigilant following the high rainfall that triggered the rise in the water discharge of the Citarum and Cibeet Rivers, which are two major rivers in Karawang on Sunday.

Karawang Police Public Relations Officer, Ipda Cep Wildan, in Karawang, said that currently the condition of two major rivers in Karawang, namely the Citarum River and Cibeet, is in Alert 1 status.

This is in accordance with the latest data on water levels (TMA) sourced from Perum Jasa Tirta II, on Sunday at 08.00 WIB.

"The Citarum river TMA is recorded at 12.00 meters above sea level (msl) with Alert 1 status. Meanwhile, the Cibeet River TMA is at 19.30 msl, also with Alert 1 status," he said.

This condition is influenced by the intensity of heavy rain. Since Saturday night (17/1) until this Sunday, rain is still falling around the Karawang area.
