JAKARTA - The defense partnership agreement between the Philippines and Japan has just been signed. On this, China asked that the agreement not undermine peace and stability in the region.

"China has always maintained that inter-state cooperation should not target or harm third parties, nor should it interfere with regional peace and stability," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun in Beijing, Friday (16/1), as quoted by ANTARA, Saturday.

On Thursday, the Philippines and Japan signed a number of security cooperation agreements, including the Cross-Border Acquisition and Service Agreement (ACSA) which allows for mutual logistical support between the two countries' armed forces.

Guo said the agreement needed to be approached with caution, given Japan's military history in the Asian region during World War II, which caused great suffering, including in the Philippines and China.

He assessed that Japan did not show adequate self-reflection on its past and instead expanded its military development under the pretext of security, which was considered potentially encouraging remilitarization.

"All peace-loving countries must oppose the resurgence of militarism and maintain regional stability," Guo said.

China stressed that it would continue to monitor the development of the defense cooperation and called on the relevant countries to act responsibly for regional security.
