JAKARTA - The Minister of State Secretary, who is also the President's Spokesperson, Prasetyo Hadi, emphasized that the Draft Law (RUU) on Combating Disinformation and Foreign Propaganda is still limited to discourse.

Prasetyo explained that the bill, which aims to counter various types of disinformation and propaganda aimed at Indonesia, has not been worked on.

"It's still a discussion. Not yet (dug)," said Prasetyo after giving a statement at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Thursday, January 15, reported by ANTARA.

Pras, his nickname, explained the government's spirit to make the bill so that various online platforms can be held accountable for content or information that is disseminated.

However, Pras denied that the bill would restrict or prohibit openness of information on various platforms to social media.

"We also have to think about the effects of platforms, it's called information and communication, especially if there are irresponsible parties. Actually, the spirit is," said Pras.

With the rapid development of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), Pras does not want the sophistication of technology to be used for destructive and irresponsible things.

"Technology (AI) is actually used for something that is less responsible or even something that is destructive, for example. If it is positive, wow we have to be technology literate, we actually have to want to catch up in terms of technology," said Pras.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the government was preparing (RUU) on Combating Foreign Disinformation and Propaganda because there were still many misunderstandings about news and information from outside parties regarding national developments and interests, which were used as propaganda material to corner Indonesia.

"It's not only in the political field, but also in the economic field, especially related to competition," said Yusril when met in Jakarta, Wednesday (14/1).

Even though it is being prepared, he said that until now there has been no official draft of the Anti-Disinformation and Foreign Propaganda Bill because it is still in the study phase.

Yusril revealed that President Prabowo Subianto had given instructions to him and the Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas, to start thinking about various steps related to the formation of the bill.

Moreover, many countries already have such laws to counter disinformation and propaganda shown to a country, which Indonesia also feels.
