JAKARTA - The Ministry of Environment (KLH) will file a civil lawsuit against six companies suspected of contributing to flooding and landslides in the northern Sumatra region, with a lawsuit value of trillions of rupiah.

Minister of Environment/Head of the Environment Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said the lawsuit would be filed in court in the near future.

"In this initial stage, there are six companies that we will register their lawsuits in court regarding their contribution to the floods in northern Sumatra," said Hanif after a meeting with the Association of Regional Legislative Assemblies of Indonesia (Adkasi) in Jakarta, Antara, Wednesday, January 14.

Hanif said the registration process for the lawsuit was still in the finalization stage of documents because it required very strict and thorough studies. The lawsuit, he said, will be valid for one year.

"The document is very rigid, but it will be valid for one year," he said.

When asked about the identity of the company that would be sued, the amount of the lawsuit, and whether the value included environmental losses and recovery, Hanif was not willing to disclose in detail.

"Triliunan rupiah. Jadi mungkin nanti akan besar gugatannya. Karena dinilai semuanya, tidak ada yang lepas," katanya.

Previously, after the floods and landslides in Sumatra at the end of 2025 which killed more than 1,000 people, the KLH/BPLH had sealed a number of companies in three affected provinces, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The sealing was carried out because of the alleged activities of the company which exacerbated the impact of the disaster.

In addition, in December 2025, the KLH/BPLH also summoned eight corporations operating in North Sumatra to be questioned.

Based on KLH data as of December 15, 2025, the eight companies are PT Agincourt Resources, PT Toba Pulp Lestari, Sarulla Operations Ltd, PT Sumatera Pembangkit Mandiri, PT Teluk Nauli, PT North Sumatera Hydro Energy, PT Multi Sibolga Timber, and PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV Kebun Batang Toru.
