JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said Iranians should continue national protests and take over state institutions, as authorities there crack down on mass demonstrations.
"Iranian Patriots, Keep Demonstrating - Take Over Your Institutions!!!" President Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, launching Al Arabiya and AFP (14/1).
"Write down the names of the killers and perpetrators of violence. They will pay dearly," he said.
"I have canceled all meetings with Iranian officials until the senseless killing of the demonstrators stops. Help is on the way," he said.
However, President Trump did not detail the form of "aid" promised, in a message supporting regime change in the Islamic Republic - marking a change in US attitude from the day before.
Later that day, when asked if the United States had advised its allies to evacuate Iran, the US President said, "They should get out; it's a good idea."
Earlier, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday told reporters that diplomatic channels with Tehran remained open, stating that Iran took a "much different tone" in private discussions with President Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
President Trump also announced tariffs of 25 percent on any country that does business with Iran, increasing pressure as human rights groups estimate the crackdown has killed at least 648 people.
Iranian authorities insist they have regained control after successive mass demonstrations that have posed one of the biggest challenges to the clerical leadership since the 1979 revolution that overthrew the Shah.
