JAKARTA - North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said his country's soldiers' sacrifices would be a solid root and a lasting foundation for Pyongyang.

He said this while visiting the site of the construction of a monument to North Korean soldiers who died in the Russian war against Ukraine, state media reported on Tuesday.

Leader Kim "visited the construction site of the Museum of Commemoration of the Achievements of Combat in Foreign Military Operations" in Pyongyang the day before (Monday) and dug the first soil for planting trees at the museum, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, as quoted from The Korea Times (6/1).

Images released by North Korean state media showed Kim's wife, Ri Sol-ju, and daughter Ju-ae accompanying the leader at the event. Ju-ae herself was seen digging soil with her father to plant a tree.

Further, Leader Kim said, the sacrifice of North Korean troops "will serve as a solid root and eternal foundation supporting the greatness of the motherly DPRK," according to KCNA.

DPRK is an abbreviation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea's official name.

When he gave official awards in August last year to soldiers sent to support Russia in the war, Leader Kim revealed plans to make a special road in Pyongyang to commemorate their sacrifices, with the construction of a museum starting in October.

This marks the first time North Korea will build a museum to commemorate soldiers who died in battles abroad.

North Korea has sent more than 10,000 troops and conventional weapons to support Russia's war effort, with thousands believed to have died in the fighting.
