JAKARTA - The Democratic Party stated that it would be in line with President Prabowo Subianto in responding to the issue of changing the regional head election system (Pilkada) which will be chosen by the DPRD.
Secretary General of the Democratic Party Herman Khaeron conveyed this attitude departing from the provisions of the 1945 Constitution which gives the state the authority to regulate the mechanism for the election of regional heads through legislation.
"Therefore, both direct elections and through the DPRD are legitimate choices in the Indonesian democratic system," said Herman in a written statement quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, January 6.
He said the Democratic Party was in the same line as President Prabowo.
The Democratic Party considers the election of regional heads by the DPRD as one of the options that should be seriously considered, especially in order to strengthen the effectiveness of local government, improve leadership quality, and maintain political stability and national unity.
However, he said he also emphasized that the Pilkada concerned the interests of the people at large. Therefore, the discussion of this policy must be carried out openly, democratically, and involve public participation, so that every decision made still reflects the will of the people and the spirit of democracy.
"For the Democratic Party, the principle is clear, whatever the mechanism chosen, democracy must remain alive, the people's voice must continue to be respected, and national unity must always be maintained as the main foundation of nation and state life," he said.
Previously, the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said the 1945 Constitution did not prohibit regional heads to be elected through the DPRD, as long as it was carried out democratically.
"The law does not prohibit as long as it is carried out democratically," Tito told reporters at the Ministry of Home Affairs Headquarters, Jakarta, Thursday (11/12/2025).
Tito added that the direct election of regional heads by voters or elected through representatives in the DPRD, both still meet the democratic definition.
"Democracy can be two, directly chosen by the people or through the DPRD. The 45th Constitution does not prohibit it," he said.
