The fate of Merana Venezuelans after the American attack

JAKARTA - The United States' attack made a number of Venezuelans homeless and had no funds to finance the funerals of their family members.

Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on Monday, January 5, that one of the Venezuelan families living on the outskirts of Caracas said they had now lost their homes and sources of livelihood after the US air raids.

The US attack partially destroyed the family home in the coastal state of La Guaira, north of Caracas, and killed an 80-year-old woman.

"We have no place to live. We need to bury my aunt, but we also don't have money for that, we are a poor family," said a 62-year-old man as reported by ANTARA.

Another Venezuelan from the city of Catia La Mar, near Caracas, said an elderly neighbor was killed by a rocket fragment.

The attack also destroyed an apartment building inhabited by 17 families. He added that Venezuelans are still struggling to overcome the trauma caused by the US attack.

On January 3, the United States launched a massive attack on Venezuela, arresting President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and bringing them to New York.

US President Donald Trump announced that Maduro and Flores would be tried for alleged involvement in narco-terrorism and considered a threat, including to the United States.

In response to the US operation, Caracas called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

The Supreme Court of Venezuela then appointed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as the interim head of state.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and called for the release of Maduro and his wife, as well as demanding the prevention of further escalation.

Similarly, China also called for the immediate release of the Maduro couple, stressing that the United States' actions violated international law.
