JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sukamta, highlighted the serious development of the global geopolitical situation after the military aggression of the United States (US) led by President Donald Trump ended in the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Sukamta said that this incident was a real threat to the principle of sovereignty of a country as well as the international legal order.

"The arrest of the head of a sovereign state unilaterally without a valid international legal mechanism shows that the world is moving towards an era of global politics based on power, not law," Sukamta told reporters, Monday, January 5.

The PKS politician assessed that the US's actions had the potential to create a dangerous precedent that could be normalized by other powerful countries. According to Sukamta, the impact of the action was not only felt in the Latin American region, but also on global stability, especially for developing countries and the Global South.

"Today Venezuela, tomorrow it could be another country. This is a loud alarm for all countries that uphold the principle of non-intervention and peaceful settlement," said the legislator from the Yogyakarta District Electoral District.

Sukamta assessed that Indonesia must consistently carry out a free and active foreign policy by encouraging the resolution of conflicts through diplomacy and multilateralism.

He emphasized that the Indonesian government must not be silent against practices that undermine state sovereignty and damage international norms after World War II.

Furthermore, Sukamta also highlighted the role of the United Nations (UN) which is increasingly being tested. According to him, the UN is at a crossroads to carry out reforms to remain relevant as a world peacekeeper, or to be increasingly marginalized by the unilateral actions of powerful countries.

"The UN must not only be a forum for rhetoric, but must be able to enforce international law fairly and equally," he said.

On the other hand, Sukamta asked the Indonesian government, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) to increase vigilance and protection for Indonesian citizens (WNI) in the affected areas and prepare contingency measures if the security situation worsens.

"The safety of Indonesian citizens is the top priority. The state must be present, while maintaining Indonesia's position as a moral voice that consistently fights for global peace and justice," he said.

Sukamta emphasized that Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives will continue to monitor Indonesia's foreign policy in order to remain based on the constitution, international justice, and humanitarian solidarity, and reject all forms of normalization of military intervention that threaten world peace.
