KUPANG - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of the potential for extreme weather in all areas of East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) for the next week until Sunday, December 28.
The head of the BMKG's Class II El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station, Sti Nenot'ek, said that the public was asked to be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rain which could be accompanied by lightning and short-lived strong winds.
"Be alert to the potential for moderate to heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds for a short duration until December 28, 2025," said Sti Nenot'ek in Kupang, Antara, Tuesday, December 23.
The weather condition was triggered by the circulation of a cyclone in the south of NTT or the northern region of Australia which has the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone. In addition, the active low atmospheric waves as well as the Equatorial Rossby Waves and Kelvin Waves also affect the weather dynamics in the region.
"This phenomenon resulted in the formation of turning areas, meetings, and slowing down the wind speed which supports the occurrence of heavy rain accompanied by lightning and short-lived strong winds in the NTT region," he said.
BMKG estimates that all administrative areas in NTT, which include 21 regencies and one city, are potentially affected by this extreme weather.
The public is urged to increase vigilance against potential hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, landslides, and flash floods, especially in areas with steep topography, cliffs, and mountains.
In addition, residents who live around the Lewotobi Laki-Laki Volcano, East Flores Regency, are also asked to be alert to the potential for rain lahar flooding.
BMKG emphasized that the public did not need to panic, but was advised to continue to monitor the latest weather information developments given the dynamic atmospheric conditions. Regional heads are also urged to coordinate with BPBD and TNI-Polri to increase preparedness to face the potential impact of extreme weather.
Weather information and early warnings can be accessed through the El Tari Kupang Class II Meteorological Station through a 24-hour weather information service at number (0380) 881613, WhatsApp 0811-3940-4264, Info BMKG application (iOS and Android), and social media @infobmkgeltari.
