JAKARTA - Indonesia will soon sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) which will hold its high-level conference (summit) in St. Petersburg, Russia, on December 21-22 local time.

According to a Kremlin statement on Saturday (20/12), Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in St. Petersburg on Sunday to attend the Eurasian Economic Summit, which will discuss the latest issues facing the EAEU.

"In particular, a free trade agreement will be signed between the Eurasian Economic Union and the Republic of Indonesia (on the occasion)," the Kremlin said.

In addition to attending the EAEU Summit, President Putin is also scheduled to attend an informal meeting of the heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) on Monday (22/12).

A number of regional leaders who have attended Russia to attend one or both of the agendas include Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov, and Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.

Other leaders who will attend are Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the RIA Novosti news agency reported on Sunday that Putin would hold separate meetings with Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the CIS meeting.

However, Azerbaijan has yet to confirm President Aliyev's presence.

The EAEU was formed through a treaty signed in May 2014 and has been in force since January 2015. Its member countries are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia.

Meanwhile, the CIS organization was established in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union with the aim of advancing cooperation in the economic, political, and security fields.

The countries that are members of the CIS are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan is a member of the CIS association, and Moldova has suspended its participation in CIS meetings since 2022.
