JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) will provide employment social security for informal workers as a protection effort for them.

"This sector is vulnerable because of the lack of adequate guarantees. Therefore, the expansion of social security for informal workers will be our concern in the future," said Assistant People's Welfare (Askesra) of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Secretary, Ali Maulana Hakim, in the Regional Working Meeting of the Poverty Alleviation Coordination Team (TKPK) DKI Jakarta Province Quarter IV 2025 in Jakarta, Friday, December 19 reported by ANTARA.

Informal sector workers are known to be vulnerable to economic turmoil and a below-average level of well-being; such as farmers, fishermen, street vendors, and other non-wage workers.

Ali said that informal sector workers in Jakarta have increased this year. Referring to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) DKI Jakarta in August 2025, the population working in the informal sector reached 1.88 million people (36.63 percent), an increase of 0.32 percent compared to August 2024.

Meanwhile, for formal workers, the employment social security mechanism is already running well. In August 2025, the population working in formal activities amounted to 3.25 million people (63.37 percent).

Regarding social security protection, a number of strategies carried out by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government include providing subsidies for health social security membership payments for those who are unable to afford it and making hospital services in class 3 free of charge.

"Through this scheme, it is hoped that the Universal Health Coverage can be realized without leaving anyone behind, including the poor and vulnerable groups," said Ali.
