JAKARTA - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has issued an urgent appeal to Colombia asking for military assistance, as tensions with the US have reached a critical point.
Maduro stressed that "the greatest guarantee" of peace and regional sovereignty lies in the "unity" between allied countries. He specifically urged the Colombian armed forces to ally with Venezuela to prevent foreign intervention.
"I ask the Colombian people, its social movements, and the Colombian military, whom I know well," Maduro said, quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, December 18.
"I call for perfect unity with Venezuela so that no one dares to touch the sovereignty of our country," Maduro added.
This appeal follows a series of escalations from Washington that Maduro says show the true intentions of US President Donald Trump by accusing Venezuela of stealing "oil, land, and other American assets".
The Venezuelan leader called the accusations "war provocation and colonial pretense" designed to justify regime change.
"The goal is to impose a puppet government that will not even last 47 hours, a government that will surrender the Constitution and our wealth, turning Venezuela into a colony," Maduro told his supporters.
"That will never happen," he said.
Previously, the escalation of confrontation intensified on Tuesday (16/12) when Trump threatened to designate the Maduro government as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).
The US president boasted on the Truth Social platform about the presence of a massive navy surrounding the country in the South American region.
"Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest fleet in the history of South America," Trump wrote, adding that the force would grow.
Trump also threatened a surprise they had never seen before, until they returned all oil, land, and other assets to the US that he had previously claimed had been stolen from the superpower.
